In Dallas, my husband and I were hustling to prepare our Condo to serve as a rental property before our move to Austin in June of 2015. Our small kitchen was a big project. We had already replaced the hideous fluorescent light fixture, and the 1980’s kitchen faucet, microwave, and fridge. Never touching the cream laminate countertops and stark white walls, they desperately needed to be touched up now.
Do-It-Yourself online projects have a way of looking so simple and enticing. Away from the perfectly staged online pictures, home projects can be challenging. In real life, we don’t always produce Pinterest-worthy results – but it doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t try, or that we can’t have fun along the way.
In our time of need, our own Kelli Davis came to help me with the kitchen refresh. What began as a “DIY Adventure” spiraled into a type of “I Love Lucy” sketch, and DIY fail. If you’re going to fail, then it should at least be hilarious – so this interview recounts our ridiculous DIY kitchen renovation. The two products for my tongue in cheek review here are the Devine Color Peel and Stick Wallpaper and Behr Premium Plus Paint.
With a paint roller for a microphone, this is a low-budget, unedited and unscripted shoot. As such, it encapsulates our DIY misadventure. The last 8 seconds kill me. It reminds me that the ability to laugh, especially at ourselves, is an important part of our journey. This is not just about sharing perfectly curated highlights, but our authentic selves.
